Equipment

  • Two shots of espresso Use your preferred way of brewing an espresso
  • 1 Milk frother
  • 1 cup or glass
  • 1 spoon

Ingredients

  • 2 shots Espresso
  • 2 oz Milk

Instructions

  • Start by grinding your coffee beans fresh. You will want to use a medium grind for an espresso macchiato. Aim for the texture of sand.
Brew your espresso using about 18-20 grams of coffee grounds.
Warm (not boil) the milk on the stovetop or in the microwave. Then froth your milk using a steam wand or an automatic frother. You will want to create a light, creamy foam for your macchiato.
Pour the espresso into a demitasse or small cup.
Gently add the desired amount of milk and foam to the top of the espresso.
Macchiato is typically served in a demitasse; a small cup or glass and is often enjoyed after a meal as a dessert. While macchiato can be enjoyed at any time of day, it is particularly popular in the morning or afternoon as a pick-me-up.

Notes

Top tips for making great macchiatos

When made well, a macchiato should be rich and flavorful, with a smooth texture and a lovely foam topping. The key to making a great one is using quality ingredients and paying attention to the details – from the grind size and extraction time to the steaming and pouring techniques.
  • Start with high-quality espresso. This is the foundation of a great macchiato, so it's important to use beans that are freshly roasted and ground.
  • Use whole milk for the best results - skim milk will not produce the same rich foam topping.
  • Make sure that you foam your milk properly. To do this, heat the milk until it's steaming and then use a handheld frother to whip it into a light, airy foam.
  • Experiment with different ratios of espresso to milk until you find the perfect balance for your taste.
  • When assembling your macchiato, start with a good espresso and then top it off with the foamed milk. The result should be a rich, creamy drink with perfectly balanced flavors.
With these tips in mind, you can easily make a delicious macchiatos at home.
