What is Iced Coffee?

It’s a cold and refreshing version of regular hot coffee, made by brewing coffee using your preferred method, then cooling it down and serving it over ice.

It’s an ideal choice for when you want to enjoy your favorite coffee in a more refreshing and summer-friendly format.

The Taste of Iced Coffee

The taste can vary depending on the brewing method, coffee beans, and additional ingredients used.

Chilled coffee still has all the familiar notes of hot coffee, they’re just a whole lot smoother and more mellow.

With some practice and personal touches, you can create your perfect chilled coffee.

Top Tips for Making a Great Iced Coffee

  • Use the best-quality, freshest coffee you can get for a richer and more flavorful experience.
  • Unless you have an espresso machine, brew your coffee using a method that extracts most flavor, such as a French Press or pour over.
  • Allow the brewed coffee to cool down before pouring it over the ice to stop it from melting the ice. If you melt the ice it just makes your coffee taste weaker.
  • I make up a large French Press full and leave it to stand while I am getting on with other jobs. Then when it’s cool I pour it into a jug of ice cubes and put it in the fridge. That way I have it available whenever I want it. Plus, there’s enough to offer to friends and family.
  • Experiment with different sweeteners, such as simple syrup, honey, or agave nectar, to find your ideal level of sweetness.
  • Add a splash of milk, cream, flavored syrups, or even a scoop of ice cream for a delightful twist on this classic recipe.
  • For a dairy-free option, I like to try almond, soy, or oat milk. Non-dairy milks have gotten so much better recently.

The Bottom Line

FAQs

What is the best brewing method for iced coffee?

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as the best brewing method depends on your personal preferences. Popular methods include cold brew, pour-over, and even using espresso shots.

I like to brew a batch in a large French press and let it cool. Once cool, I pour it into a jug of ice cubes and store it in the fridge. There’s nothing better on a hot day than opening the fridge and just pouring a great, refreshing and cooling cup of joe.

How long does iced coffee last in the refrigerator?

It can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two days. However, it’s best consumed within a few hours to maintain its freshness and flavor.

I aim to make enough for me to have 2-3 cups (or be able to offer a cup to friends and family who call in).

When I start drinking the second cup, I brew up another batch so I am ready for later.

Is iced coffee less caffeinated than hot coffee?

The caffeine content in iced coffee depends on the brewing method and coffee beans used. Generally, it has a similar caffeine content to hot coffee, but it may be slightly diluted if some of the ice melts.

Can I make iced coffee with instant coffee?

Yes, you can make Iced Coffee with instant coffee. Simply dissolve the instant coffee granules in water, then pour over ice and add any additional ingredients as desired.

Is iced coffee healthier than hot coffee?

The healthiness of all Coffee drinks depend on the ingredients used and your personal preferences.

If you need to limit your caffeine intake, there are some great decaf coffees to choose from.

If you’re concerned about sugar or calories, opt for sugar-free sweeteners and low-fat milk alternatives.
